Today's topic is birthdays. I like birthdays because you get to have a little attention on your special day and it happens to be well, all about you. The problem with this becomes the additional scrutiny that you place upon yourself. When a birthday comes around I think of all the things that haven't done or accomplished that year, or ever for that matter. So instead of making it a happy day, it's often a day of, "why didn't I do that" or "what didn't I do."
This year is going to be different. In the true spirit of Mabon, I'm going to concentrate on all the good things that happened last year and the good things that are on the horizon. I'm going to "harvest" the good things in my life. Last year I was a good mother and wife. I became closer to my family and my husband's family. I got all of my bills under control and got to where I was able to pay them early.
I look forward to many things for the upcoming year. I hope that Penelope will continue to learn and grow. I hope that Matt will be given the opportunity to go back to school. I hope that I can continue to try to be more healthy. I hope to reconnect even more with my faith and continue to incorporate it into every portion of my life. Most of all I hope that Matt and I continue to love each other and show patience and good parenting skills.

Reading this doesn't make my hopes and accomplishments seem like much, but I feel okay with them. There are many people my age who have big houses, big jobs, multiple kids, brand new cars, blah blah blah. I would be lying if I said I never wanted any of those things, but I think not having them makes every little thing in my life feel that much more special. Yeah I don't have the big house, car, and job, but I'm able to give my daughter a nice room with educational toys and instruments. She's also given the gift of two parents who actually like each other and even better, love each other. We have a car that gets us from point a. to b. Wow, even writing that makes me feel like this is going to be a pretty good year. I'm a lucky lady.
On a side note, Happy Mabon to my pagan brothers and sisters out there. This year I'm celebrating by giving thanks for everything I have and by making sure to pick from local markets and listen to mother earth if she has something she wants to tell me. Mabon is a great sabbat because it gives us the chance to reflect on the year before and to figure out how to get through the coming Winter. Mabon is a chance to balance the light and dark of one's life and settle debts or issues with others. I hope everyone out there gives thanks for life's bounty and for this extraordinary life we are all given the chance to live.
Peace ya'll
